Jerry Springer goes to radiation
Yesterday was a wild day at radiation. My scheduled time is 4:00. I was on time and in my gown working on the jigsaw puzzle when I realized that the ladies' waiting room was full and no one had been called back to treatment. In addition to Chris, veteran of Gulf War I and Billowy-haired Brunette, there were also some new faces : prune-faced Account Lady, Always in a Dress Lady, Head Case Pigtail Gal, and tiny lady accompanied by woman with a badge. I got up to see the time and when I saw it was 5:20, I asked the techs if everything was OK. Linda, head nurse, said they were doing their best. She then followed me into the waiting room & said that they had some very sick people needing treatment. No problem. Later, Chris went to check on her time and was sent back with a box of chocolates. I got up and offered the candy to each woman. It was then that I saw the person on the hospital bed, attached to a respirator, and numerous IV tubes waiting in the hall. I saw the man, his body curled into a question mark of pain, sitting in the men's waiting area. It was then that I saw the bald, shaking person clutching their walker valiantly attempting to walk alone to the door. It was then I heard the elderly woman demand that people allow her to manage her own affairs. Best of all, it was then that I was close enough to read the badge on the woman with the tiny lady. The badge identified her as a member of the Washington State Patrol. The little lady was a prisoner. WOW! Meanwhile, Michael was enjoying the rest of the Springer show in the main lobby. It was there that the mortician and his assistant came to claim Billy, the patient who died earlier in the day during his radiation treatment. They took Billy after the police came to investigate and fill out the information for the death certificate. I got my treatment at 6 PM & was home at 6:30. It was a day of unexpected drama and entertainment. But what about cancer hasn't been expected?
