The week after surgery

The days following surgery were balanced by zombie-like forays out to the kitchen to attempt to eat, deep coma sleep, and visits from friends that bathed me in love and kindness. The flowers, the meals, the books, the jokes, the letters, emails, phone calls, the cards, the notes from students...each was a vital part of my recovery. Some memorable moments: swearing my principal to secrecy that I could ever look so gruesome; a pint of double-fudge brownie ice cream brought by a neighbor; flowers-flowers-flowers! from co-workers, family, and friends near and far; a friend laying her head on the next pillow and keeping me company while I dozed; meals-on-wheels from my two schools; Michael being my faithful gatekeeper; my children reading the paper to me, finding funny jokes, teasing, listening, and reassuring; Ann's daily visits to change my bandage, assisting me during my first shower, and urging me to return to the surgeon to have the infection on the incision checked (gotta love a good RN!); Leah promising to get an overdue mammogram, Barb promising me that all will be well, the ladies of St. Matthews Church, Kitty and her soup, the 98422 Film Club...the list is endless. I was surrounded in prayer, love and grace.

What I didn't expect was the exhaustion! After three days of bed rest, I had the worst cabin fever imaginable. I begged Michael to go on a walk with me. I barely made it around the block before I was overcome with the inability to take another step - quite a shock for a woman that has walked a minimum of 3 miles a day for years.

Week 2 post surgery was our discovery of the $2 theater that shows second run movies. Knowing that I could sit and needed a change of venue, we went and saw Twilight. Must admit that we were glad we spent only $2! After the movie, it was back to bed for my nap.

Regaining my energy took my full concentration.
